Congratulations to the 2004 Michael E. Smith Endowment
for Excellence in Education Grant Recipients

Jeanne Hoose and Nancy Jessup - Wildlife Garden at Plains School - 120 children will participate in the planning, planting and maintaining of a 15' by 45' bird feeding station and wildlife garden to be planted at the Plains School. The garden will be utilized to teach the science of the seasons, the life cycle, and offer plant and insect study.

Anne Farnsworth and Lisa Curtain - The Craft of Writing Part 2 - A grant will be provided to bring celebrated children's author Ralph Fletcher back to Mosier School for a second year of instruction and reading. This author will continue his work with teachers and children on the creative writing process.

Stacey Jenkins and Karen Bradley - Parent & Child Magazine Subscription - Scholastics publishing offers this magazine bimonthly. These teachers have found an opportunity for the Endowment to purchase subscriptions for parents of the 2nd Grade to utilize with their children at home as an enrichment tool in support of in-class learning. The Endowment is currently considering additional grade levels that will benefit from this magazine and will be funding the subscriptions for those grade levels as well.

Patricia Auth and the Mosier School PTA - Mosier School Library Revitalization Project "Readers are Leaders Program" - The purchase of special collections of books in the areas of science, history and social studies has been awarded to provide literature beyond the standard materials available in support of the curriculum. This $5,000 grant will purchase in excess of 270 books supporting fields of study including insects, plant life, weather, government and communities, geography, early American history, biographies and biology.

Nancy Kulewicz - Perkins Institute for the Blind will host a group of students for a day. These students have studied Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan through their reading of The Miracle Worker. This is a unique opportunity for these students to visit blind students who have overcome adversity. As this was the school where Helen Keller "found her voice," the experience will be very enriching.

Nancy Kulewicz and Joanne Devine - CRIDDERS - The CRIDDERS Theater Group for the Blind will provide performances for all students of the Middle School. Students will gain exposure to and understanding of sign language and interaction with people with disabilities. There will also be an after school program about sign language.

Margie Conway - Accelerated Reader - With this $4,500 grant, the Accelerated Reader program at the Middle School will be completed. As a result, 2,450 books in the library will now have the computer based reusable quizzes to assess the reading comprehension of students throughout the entire school. This computerized curriculum software system is used to dramatically accelerate student reading on an individualized basis.

Pamela Hunter and Tina - High School Poetry Project -. Freshman year students will attend the Romeo and Juliet performance at Springfield Symphony Hall and local poet and performer Magdalena Gomez will visit the sophomore and junior classes at the High School. These events are the culmination of a year of study of poetry and part of a much larger celebratory month.

Dan Smith - Summer School Enrichment Program - This two week program will provide enrichment to students entering the High School as freshman next fall. Utilizing the book "What Smart Students Know: Maximum Grades, Optimum Learning, Minimum Time," Dan Smith will work with these students to prepare them for entrance into their freshman year.
